KATLA STUDIO in collaboration with tanner and artist Lene Zachariassen.
Katla and Lene have their separate art studios located in the old herring factory in Hjalteyri, North of Iceland, and share nature as their main source of inspiration. Katla had just started her research for a new collection using the claw of a polar bear and the wilderness of the north as her focal point, and the idea of a collaboration occurred. At a similar time Lene had received a polar bear that had travelled to Iceland and stepped foot in Hornstrandir 2nd of may 2011 and kept frozen for 13 years, now ready for tanning, restoration and reservation. The project allowed the two artists to work together, intertwining their skills to create unique pieces in this new jewellery collection, named “BORN IN THE EXTREME”. Lene grants access to rare materials such as the snout and fur of a polar bear that Katla combines with silver using traditional methods found within jewellery design.
